A moisture meter helps you compare moisture readings in wood, drywall and other building materials. This guide compares what independent reviewers and working home inspectors recommend. It is a starting point, not a diagnosis.
Gear we use
This site's editor has used the Extech MO55 and the General Tools Digital Pin/Pinless Moisture Meter, both listed below, and currently uses a pin-type Calculated Industries AccuMASTER XT. This is a statement of use, not a test, rating or endorsement; the ranking below comes only from the sources listed.
How we ranked these
We compared 3 independent sources: published buying guides and, where noted, discussions among working professionals. A product scores higher when more sources feature it (and, where a source orders its picks, when it ranks the product higher); sources that state hands-on testing count more (†). Products with equal scores are listed alphabetically. We did not test these products ourselves, and no manufacturer pays for placement.

Consultant's checklist (general guidance)
- Take readings at several spots and compare them to a known dry area of the same material.
- Meters read differently on different materials; check the manual's material settings.
- Pin and pinless meters measure differently: pinless is non-invasive, pin gives a direct reading at a point.
- If readings stay high, or you see staining, odor or visible growth, consider a qualified professional.
